Travel Insurance & Inclement Weather

As you are probably going to Florida for the beautiful tropical weather, along with it comes tropical storms.  One of the realities of living in Florida is the weather.  As with the nice weather we have throughout the year – comes the event of Tropical Storms and Hurricanes.  Hopefully during your vacation, you will have nice weather and maybe an occasional rain storm.  However you still need to be prepared in case a Tropical Storm approaches and possibly a Hurricane.  We have storm seasons ranging from the “rainy season” to “Hurricane season” so your weather expectations will vary depending on the time of year you visit the Island.  Here are the general seasonal weather for the Island:

Nov - Apr       Dry Season, we get very little rain during these months.

May – Oct       Rainy Season, it will rain (sometimes daily) but only short durations.

Jun – Nov        Hurricane season, however the more active months are July-Sept.

The following deals with the various weather scenarios you may encounter:

Tropical Storms – this will be the highest probability for bad weather during your vacation.  A tropical storm will have higher than normal winds and a lot of rain.  Note that the Beach House is set-up to accommodate you during such storms.  For example, you can safely sit on the front balcony area during such storms.  All of the upstairs windows have storm shutters to break up the wind and all of the French Doors are storm ready – double paned.  If it is just a lot of rain and not too windy, you can still sit outside on the bottom deck by the pool – as this is covered as well.  Note that most Tropical Storms will pass thru in a day or two and is generally followed by extremely beautiful weather.

Hurricanes – this is probably the worst case scenario for your vacation.  However, I have made preparations in case such a situation would occur.  If we are under any kind of Hurricane warning or if there is a Hurricane approaching that could hit the Island – you must evacuate.  Under an evacuation scenario, you should contact Island Real Estate and they will give you advice as to where to go, etc.  I have made arrangements with Interval International who rents out timeshares in Orlando and in other parts of the State.  Depending on where you want to evacuate to – I can most likely get you a timeshare.  Note that the timeshares are usually 2 to 3 bedrooms plus a sleeper couch and can most likely handle the size of your group.  If you have a large group, we may be able to get two units.

Tornados – even though this has not happened directly on the Island, we have had water spouts (tornadoes over water) off the coast line and a few have briefly come ashore.  In case of high winds or strange looking clouds on the Beach – please get off the Beach and back to the House or another shelter.  The weather here is pretty easy to read – if it looks strange and ominous it usually means bad weather.  If there are high winds or tornado warnings, the safest place in the Beach House is the Office / Spa area.

Travel Insurance – if you are traveling at certain times of the year where the weather is unpredictable, you may want to purchase travel insurance for your trip.  Note that you can get a wide range of coverage for a minimal amount of money.  Island Real Estate offers travel insurance at the time of your reservation.  There are also several web sites where you can price different travel insurance carriers, here is one I like:

 www.insuremytrip.com

If you have a large group or just simply want to protect your vacation, then I would recommend getting some level of coverage.  For example, if you have to evacuate the Island, who is going to pay for your temporary lodging.  From an owners perspective, if you have to evacuate the Island and you purchased travel insurance, I will reimburse you for the lodging part of your insurance premium.  Note that travel insurance will cover your airfares, rental car, meals, etc. depending on “what” you want to have covered.  Anyway – this whole section is not meant to scare you, but to make sure you are prepared.  Planning is everything.  The highest probability is that you are going to have nice weather and maybe an occasional rain storm.
